Teen Faces Domestic Abuse Charge

 

Justin Michael Ferguson, 18, of Sallisaw was charged July 30 in Sequoyah County District Court with a felony count of domestic assault and battery by strangulation. Sallisaw police were called to a home on July 22 where two people were allegedly fighting. The report alleges Ferguson was found in a bedroom attacking his girlfriend. When the officer attempted to pull the female subject away, the male, identified as Ferguson, fell to the floor. He was then arrested and transported to the city jail without incident. The officer noted this was the second domestic abuse case filed against Ferguson. Ferguson pleaded not guilty to both charges, the most recent on July 30. The case is on Judge Larry Langley's August 20 felony disposition docket.

Muldrow Man Charged with Felony Drunk Driving

A third offense of driving while under the influence of alcohol resulted in a Muldrow man being charged in district court with a felony. Timothy Allen Wann, 47, was charged July 30 with a felony count of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with transporting an open container of beer and no valid driver's license, both misdemeanors. According to the police officer's report, Wann was stopped July 26 on U.S. Highway 64, three miles east of Sallisaw, because he was driving left of center. The officer reported Wann failed sobriety tests, and was arrested and transported to the county jail. Wann pleaded not guilty to the charge on July 30, and his case is on Judge Larry Langley's August 20 felony docket. According to Oklahoma laws, a third driving under the influence of alcohol charge is a felony, punishable by up to 10 years of prison, a fine of up to $5,000 and revocation of a driver's license for up to three years.

Sallisaw Man Accused of Assault and Battery

A 40-year-old Sallisaw man was charged July 23 in Sequoyah County District Court with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a baseball bat. Deronie Lee Cheater is accused of using a metal baseball bat to attack Lisa Cheater. Lisa Cheater suffered a broken arm from the attack, according to the Sallisaw police report filed with the charge. The officer reported Deronie Cheater allegedly was "drunk and got mad at Lisa and picked up a metal baseball bat and hit Lisa two or three times." Lisa Cheater said he hit her on the left side of her face and her left forearm, which was broken. The officer then received a call about Deronie Cheater throwing a hatchet at someone's front door at a Sallisaw mobile home park. Cheater was arrested shortly after. Preliminary Re-set for Accused Rapist

 

The preliminary hearing for an accused rapist and molester has been re-set for August 27 in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw. A $170,000 bond was also set at the hearing held on July 30 for Troy L. Sands, 32, of Gore. Sands was charged June 12 with 11 counts of first-degree rape of a victim under the age of 14, and six counts of lewd molestation. The charges involve two girls, sisters, who Sands allegedly began raping and molesting when they were six and seven years old. According to information filed with the charges, Sands allegedly forced the two girls to have sex with him on numerous occasions between 2008 and 2010, beginning when the youngest girl was six and her sister seven. The allegations came to light when the girls' mother reported them to Muldrow police in March. By Sally Maxwell, Senior News Director

Health Care Study Approved

 

 

A study on the health care provided to veterans and senior citizens will be done in the fall, after it was requested by State Rep. Joe Dorman (D-Rush Springs), State Rep. John Bennett (R-Sallisaw) and other state legislators. The study was recently approved by House Speaker Jeff Hickman (R-Fairview). Dorman (pictured above) said in a press release, " I will request testimony from the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs and the Aging Services Division of the Department of Human Services to address our concerns." Dorman said the Oklahoma Health Care Authority received a 5 percent reduction in its budget for next year, and the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs had a 1.2 percent increase. The study will be combined with that requested by State Rep. Gary Banz (R-Midwest City) to look into veterans' affairs facilities in the state. Others requesting the study were Reps. Two Charged With Drug Offenses



 

Two people were charged July 30 for drug offenses in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw. Cherokee Huggins, 62, of rural Sallisaw address, and Kevin Wayne Sanders, 26, also of Sallisaw, were charged after a drug investigation on July 18 by members of the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department, Sallisaw Police Department, and the Sequoyah County District Attorney's Drug Task Force at the Huggins home. Huggins was charged July 30 with possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance in the presence of a minor, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Sanders was charged with possession of a controlled substance in the presence of a minor and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Both Huggins and Sanders entered not guilty pleas to the charges on July 30 and both cases are on Judge Larry Langley's disposition docket August 20.

 

According to the investigator's report Huggins had her grandchild at the home at the time of the investigation. The child was picked up by his mother. The officers reported finding six rifles and a handgun in the home, several pill bottles and a notebook in which alleged drug transactions were recorded. Officers also reported finding a chainsaw in a storage building that was reportedly received in exchange for drugs. The officers reported Sanders drove up during the search of the property and in the vehicle he was driving they found unknown pills that were sent to the OSBI lab for identification. They also found six used syringes that were destroyed. Sanders was living in a camper parked next to the house and officers reported finding, in the camper, cans containing residue and multiple used syringes. By Sally Maxwell, Senior News Director

Sallisaw Lions Club Donates to PTO

The Sallisaw Lions Club presented a check to Sallisaw Eastside PTO members at this weekend's Lions Club Rodeo. During the 2013-14 school year PTO members worked to raise money for new playground equipment hoping to have it purchased and installed before the 2014-15 school year began. Unfortunately they fell short of the amount needed by $12,000. According to PTO member Amanda Sullivan, after their need was presented to the Sallisaw Lions Club they didn't hesitate to help them reach their goal amount. The Lions Club also played an instrumental part in helping raise funds for the playground equipment recently purchased and installed for the Liberty Elementary playground. Several Lions Club members were present every day with PTO members, school personnel and parent volunteers working hard during the installation process. "Once made aware of the need for new playground equipment at the Eastside Elementary campus they continued on with their dedication to the children of the Sallisaw community and offered to assist both monetarily and with hands-on volunteering," stated Sullivan.  Marley Abell, Sallisaw Lions Club member (above, middle) presented the $12,000 donation check to Eastside PTO members Kim Sheffield (above, left) and Wendy Brooks (above, right).
