A Roland man was arrested March 12 and charged with child endangerment by driving under the influence, a felony, court records show.
Charles Coughran, 45, faces up to four years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000. He was also hit with a misdemeanor charge of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (aggravated), which is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment for up to a year, at least one year of supervision with periodic testing, aftercare and ignition interlock for a minimum of 90 days.
Coughran was released on $4,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. April 7.
On March 12, a Roland police officer was on patrol at the intersection of Roland Road and U.S. Highway 64 facing eastbound when he saw a vehicle traveling south on Roland Road run the red light and turn westbound. When the officer’s light turned green, he followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
When he approached the driver the officer detected the smell of alcohol coming from him. The officer then performed several field-sobriety tests, which Coughran failed.
After Coughran was arrested, an 11-year-old boy was found sitting in the back of the vehicle. He was returned safely to his mother.
At the Roland Police Department, Coughran’s blood-alcohol content was 0.257, records show.
