Man and Dog Recovered in Swift Water Rescue on Drake Road

Sequoyah County’s Swift Water Rescue Team was dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. Friday to recover a driver trapped in a Jeep on the low-water bridge on Drake Road, on Sallisaw’s south side.

It was reported by authorities that water streaming over the road swept the vehicle nearly off the bridge and left it hanging over the bridge’s edge. It was in danger of rolling over, rescuers reported.

Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said the department’s ladder truck was deployed to reach across the swift water and retrieve the driver (pictured above).

The male driver and his dog were retrieved by two Sallisaw firefighters by 12:30 p.m., Armstrong reported. No one was injured in the rescue.

Armstrong said, “Everybody is OK. We are washing the mud off now.”

He added that the man’s Jeep was still hanging off the bridge and a pickup truck could be seen downstream after it was swept away about a week ago.
