Voter Registration Deadline is March 13

The last day to apply for voter registration, to vote in the April 7 Town of Roland and Vian municipal elections and Vian School runoff election, is March 13, the Sequoyah County Election Board reminded residents this week. Cindy Osborn, Sequoyah County Election Board secretary, said persons who are U.S. citizens, Oklahoma residents and at least 18 years old, may apply to become registered voters. Those who have never been registered to vote or who are not currently registered, and persons who are registered but who need to change their registration information may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma Voter Registration Application form in time for it to be postmarked no later than midnight March 13. Osborn explained that applications postmarked after that time will still be accepted and processed. However, the applications will not be approved until after April 7.

Osborn said, "The county election board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration. The response is either a voter identification card listing the new voter's precinct number and polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved." Osborn said that anyone who has submitted a voter registration application and who has not received a response within 30 days should contact the election board office at 918-775-2614. Voter registration applications are available at the election board office at 110 E. Creek in Sallisaw, and at most post offices, tag agencies, and public libraries in the county. Osborn said that applications also are available at www.elections.ok.gov, and voters can check their registration status at http://www.ok.gov/elections/Voter_Info/Online_Voter_Tool/.

In the Roland election, two candidates are seeking a four-year term as Town Trustee Ward 1. They are Aaron Pitts and Jimmy Don Peterson. Two others seek election as the Town Trustee for Ward 3, also a four-year term. They are Cody Click and B.J. Bramlett.

In Vian, four candidates seek three posts as town trustees. Voters will choose three of the four. The candidates are Monty Davis, Emaneul Drew, E.O. Jr. Smith, Verlita Meade and Rick Peoples. The winners will serve four-year terms.

A runoff election will decide who serves on the Vian School Board of Education. The candidates are Casey Sullivan and Mike Cobb.
