Alleged Police Car Thief in LeFlore County Jail

A 56-year-old Spiro man is in the LeFlore County Jail Thursday morning, where he was booked for theft of an automobile.

A mental evaluation of Berry Persall will be up to the LeFlore County District Attorney, Spiro Police Chief Michael Draper said.

Draper said Persall told authorities that he left his home on Wednesday evening looking for police because someone was shooting at him. Persall said he walked to the Spiro Police Department seeking help but the office was closed. Persall then found an open Spiro police vehicle, which he stole. According to reports he drove into Fort Smith then into Oklahoma on Interstate 40. He was stopped west of Muldrow driving west in the eastbound lane. Draper said the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Muldrow Police Department and Sequoyah County deputies were all in the vicinity trying to stop Persall.

Draper said he did not believe anyone had been shooting at Persall.

"He does have some issues," Draper said.
