State Sen. Mark Allen sent a letter on Sept. 4 to the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs endorsing the choice of either Sallisaw or Poteau as the site for the new Veterans Center.
The center is to replace the one at Talihina, which is to be closed. Muskogee has also submitted a proposal for the new center. Both Sallisaw and Poteau are in Allen’s Oklahoma District 4.
In the letter Allen writes:
“First of all, a sincere thank you for your service in the state of Oklahoma to our veterans.
“Due to the Oklahoma Veterans Commission’s recent vote to close the Veterans Center at Talihina, I respectfully request the Commission to best serve the veterans and families of eastern Oklahoma by relocating the Veterans Center to Senate District 4.
“Senate District 4 includes Sequoyah County and the northern half of LeFlore County and is within the prescribed 90-mile radius. Both applicant towns in Senate District 4, Poteau and Sallisaw, have a Carl Albert State College campus that has one of the best nursing schools in the state, a hospital, a career tech for employee training, and good water. Each county offers a willing and available workforce and an airport. As such, Senate District 4 is the clear and best choice for our veterans and their families. We are a veteran-friendly community and deeply respectful and appreciative of our veterans’ service. It would be our pleasure to serve those who have served us.
“It is my pleasure to serve as Senator of Senate District 4 and if there is anything I can help you with in this office, please let me know. Please feel free to write or call my office at 405.521.5576, or email allen@oksenate.gov.
“Sincerely, Senator Mark Allen”
