Two men were arrested by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) on Sept. 6 after they were found transporting 29 bundles of marijuana that weighed in excess of 25 pounds.
Jose Alcaraz Sanchez, 21, of Arleta, Calif., and Donato Sanfilippo, 25, of Palmetto, Ga., were both charged with trafficking in illegal drugs and misdemeanor counts of possession of paraphernalia on Sept. 11 in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.
They both were released Sept. 6 on $26,000 bonds each.
The arresting OHP trooper reported he stopped a Kia SUV going east on Interstate 40 near the 307 Mile Marker for following too closely. After interviewing the driver, Sanchez, the trooper reported he detected the smell of marijuana and called for assistance from a drug dog. The dog demonstrated a positive hit on the vehicle which resulted in the trooper finding the 29 bundles of marijuana.
Both Sanchez and Sanfilippo are to be arraigned in district court on Wednesday.
