A rural Sallisaw man was taken to a local hospital for observation Friday morning after his Dodge pickup truck, pulling a 16-foot trailer, was hit by a freight train.
Ray Jiles was not believed to have any life-threatening injuries, police officers at the scene said.
They reported Jiles was driving south on County Road 4640 when he drove onto the Kansas City Southern railroad crossing at the road’s intersection with East Delaware on Sallisaw east side. The train engine hit the truck on the right front, spinning it off the road to the west, into a pile of railroad ties and down a 20-foot embankment.
The accident, reported at about 9:15 a.m., was being investigated by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol with
the assistance of the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department. Railroad officials were also at the scene.
Police reported the county road was closed only for a short period of time.
