As fall approaches (it officially arrives at 3:21 a.m. on Sept. 23), and the weather cools, activities heat up in Sequoyah County.
The Women in the Outdoors will fulfill any woman's need for a day out in the clean air, and will be held Nov. 6 through 8 at Tenkiller State Park. But the early-bird deadline, which offers discounts, is Oct. 6. The regular registration deadline is Oct. 20.
Leann Bunn, the park naturalist, is in charge of local arrangements. She said, "Have you ever wanted to learn how to shoot a handgun...pull back a bow and arrow...rappel down a cliff face...paddle a canoe or kayak...cast a fly rod...or perhaps just try some new outdoor-themed crafts?
"Trade your weekend to-do list for a day for yourself--a day in the outdoors. Join other women who have a love and respect for the outdoors and try something new! Grab a girlfriend! Grab your mom or your daughter and get registered for this year's event. You deserve a day outdoors!"
The event is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation, and 35 classes are offered this year, depending upon registrations. Early registration will discount by $5 the day fees, and discounts are also offered at the park on cabins and camping sites. Drawings are also held.
Early check-in is Nov. 6 from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Blackgum Fire Department Community Building.
For event information, call Bunn at (918)489-5025, ext. 6 or 918-489-5641.
The event is limited to 200 participants.
