Emergency Burn Ban Issued

An Emergency Burn Ban was issued for Sequoyah County Wednesday morning.

Sequoyah County Commissioners, after numerous fire calls on Tuesday, met in a special emergency meeting Wednesday morning and issued the burn ban.

Steve Rutherford, Sequoyah County Emergency Management Director, said the burn ban will be in effect until Monday morning. The county commissioners will review the burn ban at their regular meeting.

Rutherford said the fine for not complying with the ban is a fine of not more than $500, one year in prison or both.

Sallisaw firefighters were called to numerous fires on Tuesday, one of which destroyed a home south of Sallisaw. Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said the humidity had dropped into the teens which prompted the fires. Low humidity was expected to continue on Wednesday.
