Area fire departments are currently (1:10 p.m.) battling a grass fire north of Sallisaw near Old Highway 17. The fire is burning on the west side of the highway just past Calvary Temple Church. It stretches more than one mile in length from north to south.
The fire has already burned several acres. Some homes are in danger and those residents are currently being evacuated.
Fire Departments from Sallisaw, Brushy and the Oklahoma Forestry Dept. are on the scene and have been working to extinguish the blaze. Central Fire Dept. is headed to the scene with a water tanker.
Conditions in this area are very smoky and motorists are being urged to avoid this area of Highway 17.
