Shooting Investigation Expands to Fort Smith

Investigators are on the scene and surrounding area where a female shooting victim was found early Thursday in a ditch south of Roland.

Chief Deputy Charles House of the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department said Thursday that investigators were at a trailer home about three-quarters of a mile from where the victim was found. The resident of the trailer reported hearing gunshots at about 4 a.m. Thursday and then found a bullet lodged in her bed's headboard. She called to report the shooting at about 8:45 a.m.

House said investigators also found blood droppings in the area where the female shooting victim was found. He said she was found on State Highway 64, west of Paw Paw Road, which is actually south of Roland.

House said investigators are also following leads into the Fort Smith area where persons of interest in the shooting may live.

The female victim was found by persons who were on their way to work early Thursday. By the time deputies arrived, the woman had been transported to a Fort Smith hospital where she later underwent surgery. House said investigators hope to speak with her as soon as she is awake. The woman is now in the Intensive Care Unit, he said.

The name of the victim has not been released and investigators are not releasing the names of the persons of interest as they work to find a relationship between the victim and the persons of interest, according to House.
