Prisoners Fake Illness, Caught with Contraband

On Saturday night, Oct. 10, an inmate in the Sequoyah County Jail complaining of medical problems was transported to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital to receive medical care. While there he was caught by a jailer removing a package containing tobacco from the men's bathroom. The package was seized by the jailer.

The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Dept. began investigating a scheme for inmates to smuggle tobacco into the county jail. During the investigation it was discovered that at least three inmates had faked medical conditions in an effort to be taken to the local hospital, according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart. While at the hospital the inmates would retrieve tobacco that had been left for them in the men's restroom.

On Tuesday evening the sheriff's dept. arrested inmate Doug Collins (above, top) for developing the scheme to have his wife take and leave tobacco in the men's restroom at the hospital. The wife, Jerrica Collins (above), was also arrested for conspiracy to bring contraband into a jail. Both Doug and Jerrica Collins were charged with the same charges. Phone calls made by Doug Collins from the jail to his wife discussing the plan were recorded.
