Tahlequah Man Faces DUI Charge

A Tahlequah man was arrested Sept. 23 in Marble City and charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of drugs.

A Sequoyah County deputy patrolling Highway 17 near Marble City encountered a white Cadillac with a license plate obscured by mud. The driver, Donald Dean Christie, 55, had bloodshot eyes and his speech was slow and slurred, according to a report.

Asked if he had been drinking, Christie said no, but admitted that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

In addition to the felony DUI charge, Christie was also hit with a misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license. He was transported to the Sequoyah County Jail without incident.

Records show Christie was convicted in July 2019 of possession of a firearm after former felony conviction.

His next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 23.

The DUI charge, a felony, is punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and imprisonment for one to five years. The defendant must also undergo a minimum of 28 days of treatment followed by 30 days of aftercare, all at his own expense. The misdemeanor penalty is a fine of up to $500, imprisonment for up to a year or both.
