14-year-old Hurt in Lake Collision

A 14-year-old male was transported by air ambulance Saturday from Kerr Lake to St. Francis Children’s Hospital in Tulsa after a collision on Kerr Lake, south of Sallisaw.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported the child was listed in stable condition with leg injuries.

The OHP does not release the names of children involved in collisions.

The OHP trooper reported Ernest Thomas, 57, of Follett, Texas, was at the controls of a 2012 Blue Wave boat, and was travelling southeast in the Cowlington Cove area. He was pulling the 14-year-old and an 8-year-old male and a 12-year-old male, all riding in a tube. Thomas saw another vessel in his path and he turned the boat to the southwest. The turn caused the tube to go out of the boat’s wake, and the 14-year-old and 8-year-old struck a cement electric pole pier. The 12-year-old was able to jump from the tube before impact.

The 8-year-old was transported by private vehicle to Southeastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau where he was treated and released.

Thomas and a female passenger, Kyli Thomas, were not injured.

The collision occurred at about 5:55 p.m. near the LeFlore County side of the lake.
