Sallisaw Man Drowns in Rock Quarry

A 21-year-old Sallisaw man drowned Saturday in a rock quarry in the Short Mountain area in LeFlore County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Marine Enforcement Division reported the victim is Jacob Lewis. His body was recovered at about 9:55 a.m. Sunday, using dragging operations, in 19 feet of water.

The OHP reported Lewis and another swimmer were trying to swim across the rock quarry when Lewis began to struggle. The other swimmer tried to grab the victim but was unable to hold on. The victim then went under and never resurfaced.

The OHP was assisted by the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, the Cowlington Fire Department and the LeFlore County Dive Team.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young man.
