Traffic Stop Lead Drug Trafficking Charges

Two men from out of town were arrested in Sallisaw on May 3 and charged with several drug crimes, court records reveal.

Brandon Dewayne Clark, 23, of Dallas, Texas, and Tylin Dontrel Evell, 21, of Fayetteville, Ark., were each charged with drug trafficking, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, all felonies, and both face two misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Clark was also hit with a misdemeanor charge for unsafe lane use, the record shows.

According to the arrest report, a Sequoyah County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol May 3 saw a silver Chevrolet Malibu with North Carolina tags traveling eastbound on Cherokee Avenue near Dogwood Street.

While the deputy was watching the vehicle it failed to signal before making a lane change. The car also changed lanes at the intersection of Cherokee and Dogwood, nearly causing an accident with the car behind it.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop and came into contact with the driver, Clark, and a male passenger who appeared to be asleep. While speaking with Clark, the deputy reportedly could smell burned marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

The deputy asked Clark where he was going, to which Clark replied, “Arkansas.” Clark also said the vehicle behind him was traveling with him. Clark said he had been in Dallas for a week on vacation because he “wanted to get away from the coronavirus in Arkansas.”

While being interviewed, Clark reportedly appeared nervous, with shaking hands, legs tapping the floor and sweating profusely.

A search of the now-awake cousin, Evell, uncovered a stack of rubber-banded money, and a search of the Malibu turned up two bottles of promethazine with one bottle opened, two Mason jars containing a green, leafy substance, as well as 10 clear baggies containing multiple multi-colored pills in each bag. Deputies also discovered a Glock 9mm handgun with a fully loaded magazine and an additional fully loaded extended magazine.

The pills later field-tested positive for MDMA, or ecstasy. The drugs were sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further testing.

Clark and Evell were released on $36,000 bond each. The men face four years to life in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on the drug trafficking charges, as well as up to 10 years in prison on the weapons charges. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20.
